1. Movement-Defined Learning Pilot

The BLMF and CTPF piloted the Movement-Defined Learning and Evaluation Tool with our grantee partners in 2023, offering the utilization of the tool as a replacement for grantees’ annual reporting requirements. We developed three options for participation, designed not only to further our own learnings, but to support our grantee partners in sharpening and expanding their storytelling capacity:

Communal Survey

Organizations in the communal survey cohort received $100 gift cards for narrative responses to the Movement-Defined Learning tool. Participants were also asked to share the survey with up to two members of their community or coalition partners. Participants also received access to a free online training from the Center for Story-Based Strategies.

Highlight Video

Organizations in the highlight video cohort received a $10,000 grant to develop a video highlighting organizational successes, challenges, and other responses to the Movement-Defined Learning tool. Participants also received access to a free online training from the Center for Story-Based Strategies and one on one coaching with the Social Insights research staff.

Community Listening Session

Organizations in the community listening session cohort received a $25,000 grant to host a live town hall session to facilitate conversations in response to learning questions in the Movement-Defined Learning tool. Participants also received access to a free online training from the Center for Story-Based Strategies and one on one coaching with the Social Insights research staff.

Importantly, all participants in the Liberatory Learning Lab were compensated for their time, expertise, and feedback, receiving $100 an hour per each Liberatory Learning Lab session—as were organizations that participated in the tool’s pilot.

We are beyond grateful to the Liberatory Learning Lab cohort members for dedicating their time and talent to this project, and to our grantee partners for joining us to test these new methods.
