Article (Repost): The Floor Was Always Ours: Ballroom, Belonging, and the Democracy We Built Before They Let Us In

Now, as America turns 250 and asks itself again what and who democracy is for; how it is built: the answer is on the floor: Black, Brown, queer, and trans folks, dancing, governing, organizing, and holding one another close through it all.”

In an article published in Nonprofit Quarterly, our Fund for Trans Generations’ Interim Program Director Lupe Mahida unearths the beautiful history of ballroom culture created by Black and Latine queer and trans communities — and connects this long lineage into a lesson of how funders can defend and extend democracy today.
