In June, the Racial Equity in Philanthropy (REP) Fund awarded $1.5 million in grants to 17 philanthropy serving organizations to accelerate the impact of promising strategies, strengthen organizations’ internal capacity, and enhance learning and collaboration among the Fund’s grantee cohort.
The REP Fund invests in philanthropy serving organizations to inform, educate, and equip funders to integrate racial equity policies and practices into their grantmaking and programs. The Fund’s vision is to normalize grantmaking strategies that prioritize structural change and contribute to ending racial disparities.
In its second year of grantmaking, the Fund is awarding 12 of its grantees with amplifier grants to expand strategies that transform inequitable grantmaking practices and elevate cooperative activities within the cohort.
With the support of these funds, grantees will promote racial equity toolkits to additional audiences, develop narrative change strategies to highlight overlooked voices and stories, integrate racial healing into their work, and collaborate on producing more accurate and accessible data for multi-ethnic communities.
“Engaging with racial equity strategies to transform an organization is an ongoing process that needs consistent cultivation and sustained investment,” said Ciciley Moore, Program Officer for the Office of the President at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. “We are excited to support these organizations so that they can build on their progress and create long-lasting changes in policies and practices that will help the entire philanthropic sector address the root causes of injustice and inequity.”
The Fund is also awarding capacity building support to four organizations to strengthen their internal racial equity practices so that they are better positioned to implement strategies externally. For example, some organizations are using capacity building funds to support the development of organizational culture that will better retain staff of color while others are applying racial equity principles to their strategic planning processes.
In order to ensure that the Fund’s grantees continue to have opportunities for peer learning, the Fund is additionally supporting strategies including board engagement and trainings for CEOs and trustees of REP Fund grantee organizations, mapping of racial equity trainings and providers, and cohort-wide visioning and goal-setting.
