Community Safety and Justice
Borealis’ investments in Community Safety and Justice encompass bail reform, mental health decriminalization, healing justice, and alternatives to policing.
Our approach is grounded in the belief that community safety and justice are inseparable from democracy and deeply intertwined with racial, gender, and disability justice. We recognize that the acts of criminalization and incarceration do not cultivate safety and justice, and believe that each individual community knows best what resources and strategies they need to thrive.
By ensuring that communities are resourced and protected, we create the space for the civic engagement necessary to build a radically inclusive multiracial democracy.
To date, Borealis has invested over $57 million in frontline organizers who are safeguarding democratic principles from the threat of rising authoritarianism. The communities we support are defending the right to protest, upholding due process, resisting surveillance tactics that infringe on privacy, supporting grieving families impacted by violence, and advancing community programs and services as alternatives to incarceration and policing.
