Just Futures Initiative

Formally launched in Fall 2025, the Just Futures program is both a continuation and expansion of Borealis’ long-term commitment to grassroots-led anti-criminalization and anti-incarceration efforts. To date, Borealis has moved over $40 million to frontline organizations to expand access to community-responsive mental health resources, strengthen mutual aid networks for families impacted by violence, provide legal aid to migrants, and shift resources from policing and other forms of criminalization toward community-led programs and services that are housing, feeding, and educating people—and so much more.

In addition to resource mobilization, the Program’s capacity-building offerings have and continue to support grantee partners to weather and organize against antagonism, strengthen leadership pipelines, access fellowship, and sustain their innovative work to ensure inclusion and justice for all peoples.

The JF program prioritizes funding for organizations that believe in and help advance a world of:

• Safety Without State Violence: Communities must be safe not because they are heavily policed or over-incarcerated, but because their needs are met and their dignity is honored. They are protected because they belong.
• Freedom from Criminalization: A truly free society invests in care, not cages.
• Protection of Civil and Human Rights: A democracy cannot function when people’s rights to protest, vote, move, speak, and live are under attack.
• Belonging and Civic Power: Everyone must have a voice and feel that their voice matters—a vision we can meet through narrative change, systems change, and a commitment to collective power-building.
