Borealis Philanthropy has always acted as movement-responsive intermediary. For this reason, we've expanded, sunset, and collapsed our funds over time to meet urgent and shifting needs of grassroots frontlines. This page honors the work that we have accomplished through these dedicated funds, and carry forward in our current funding structure.
The Black-Led Movement Fund
The Black-Led Movement Fund supported the Movement for Black Lives and other values-aligned organizations to better shape policy agendas for Black communities, create alternatives to institutions that have been harmful to Black people, and build local Black community power.
The Communities Transforming Policing Fund
The Communities Transforming Policing Fund resourced local communities impacted by deadly and discriminatory policing practices to build power, increase police accountability and transparency, and redefine safety by advocating for investment in community-based programs and services as alternatives to police, jails, and prisons.
Emerging LGBTQ Leaders of Color Fund
The Emerging LGBTQ Leaders of Color Fund supported young, BIPOC, queer and trans leaders who organize at the intersection of issues like community safety, reproductive justice, and immigrant rights—and whose existence and leadership push movement spaces to become more connected, inclusive, and thus more powerful.
Racial Equity to Accelerate Change Fund
The Racial Equity to Accelerate Change Fund invested in capacity builders, organizational strategists, field builders, and other variations of racial equity practitioners whose work supports the nonprofit ecosystem to pursue inclusive governance, transcend the limits of the existing nonprofit model, and arrive at more equitable outcomes for all.
Racial Equity in Philanthropy Fund
The Racial Equity in Philanthropy Fund invested in philanthropy-serving organizations to inform, educate, and equip funders to integrate racial equity policies and practices into their grantmaking programs. This Fund sunset in 2025. We look forward to sharing our learnings about the existence and sunset of this portfolio of work with the sector in the coming months.
Spark Justice Fund
The Spark Justice Fund resourced grassroots groups working to decarcerate, redirect resources from jails to communities, and transform our collective vision of community-led safety and justice.
